Review:
I attended the cast and crew screening on Sunday, in Leicester Square, with high hopes for this movie as perhaps its most exciting job I've had. This was my first feature film experience, and working for Tim Burton was a hell of a way to start.But, even as someone with a lot of time for his films, and already existing prejudices, I can really connect with that. The cast acquits itself well, especially considering quoted difficulty emoting a tennis ball on a stick, but all their tics and eccentricities seem to hide gaps in the middle of what should be free-floating, evocative journey. Sure, it's strange, but we've seen before, and then in films like Edward Scissorhands had a sense of purpose. Now been exploring CGI wonderland that seems to be without much wonder. The book revels in his strange surroundings, absurd dialogue and whimsical characters. This movie reason them, drain them on this mystery and leaves us with colorful but forgettable retread. Seems intent on driving us to the conclusion narrative that few people will have very involved in through its running time, simply because they do not give much care fo r for.With source material so familiar, even to those whose knowledge is second hand references, there must be a certain level of innovation (as in dark Svenkmejers stop exercise version, or co-opting of Terry Gilliam Tideland in narrative), or diligent and inspired adaptation that completely returned to Lewis Carroll. What we end up with is a center that fails to come to terms with what enchant people of the Alice story, and a chance to see the beautiful waif walk around twisted, quasi-Gothic landscape for hydrogen ASSESSMENT by Danny Elfman.Not it is experience pleasant in itself, and as shown in one large screen at Empire is sometimes breathtakingly pretty. Its just not important, and while it may be unfair to expect a classic favorite movies out at a time when they are dealing with something with a pedigree and history Alice In Wonderland you can not help but hope for something special. And thats the problem, as Tim Burton, while he was still making decent films, especially during a time was a long way now.6/10 (if they gave half stars itd be 6, 5), but that does not mean it's a bad movie. Its possible that my grades are affected by high expectations and lost potential. If you have kids, Im sure itll be better than 90% of the dross that passes for family films now. At least there is some artistry involved, and when it got to be his best ever'll still pay to see Tim Burton film (though I got it for free ..).
