Review:
When this movie first came out in 1980, I remember going to see on opening night. sheer terror that I experienced in viewing Shining was enough to make me go to bed and the lights turned on every evening throughout the summer. This movie just scared the shit out of me, which is why it still happens every time I rent a video for a fresh look. I found Shining least six or seven times and I still believe that simultaneously and paradoxically enough, one of the most frightening and yet funniest movie I've ever seen. Frightening because of the exceptionally efficient use of long shots to create a sense of isolation, convex lens shots enhance surrealism, and meticulously scored music for bringing excitement levels close to levels difficult. And funny because of the outrageous Jack Nicholsons and in many cases ad-libbed screen antics. It never ceases to amaze me how Shining is actually two movies in one, both comedy and horror flick. Ghostly apparitions were threatening nature infest much of the first half of the film, which will gradually evolve into ever more serious threats to the physical as time passes. Be that as it may, there is surprisingly little violence given point obvious, but it's small consolation for the feint of heart so much more terror than expressly stated. Shining is really amazing movie that model works on many levels, but first and foremost it is about human limitations and ways they can be used to understand the forces of weakness will. This movie scares many just use your imagination to turn opinion against yours. Shining is a brilliant masterpiece films, such as has never been seen before or since. Very recommended. - Paul
